everyone says they want a “nerdy” guy. they like the idea of andrew garfield as peter parker, spencer reid, seth from the oc.
but is that what you really want in a partner? do you want to know about their so called “nerdy” interests, whether it be star wars, lotr, dnd, video games, indie niche music, poetry, or classic literature, or do you just want that kind of person. you know, glasses wearing, clumsy, awkward, lanky, etc.
when this became everyone’s type i have no clue. well maybe it was the influx of “nerdy guys” on insta and tik tok, posting edits and thirst traps. but the type of nerds these people want aren’t realistic. Not all “nerds” have chiseled jaws, brown floppy hair, and tortoise shell glasses, or are hiding a six pack under their cable knit sweaters. hate to say, but this is not a wattpad story where the mmc (male main character) is “x nerd”. now, when it comes to the female stereotype of a “nerd” it is quite different then than this.
when guys (primarily) invision a “nerd” girlfriend, they usually envision a hot girl with a secret nerd side, going home and hopping onto gaming servers and wearing oversized hoodies with her hair tied in a messy top knot. Or a kind of ugly-duckling that can be turned into a swan. Glasses wearing, shy, hair covering her eyes, good grades, and hidden under all that, big boobs, a tiny waist, and a secretly hot body.
all of these stereotypical fantasies could not be farther from the truth. because the real nerds, some of us may fit a few of these descriptions, but realistically, yeah no. most of us, have drawers full of graphic tees, pinback buttons referencing niche shows/video games/books, pinterest boards for fanart and ships we adore, finsta’s dedicated to a fandom, favorite actors/authors/ voice actors. it’s truly a lifestyle. not an aesthetic one can fall into one day.
i would call myself a nerd. i was one of those kids who would bring an absolute GIANT stack of books with me to middle school to flex how many books i was reading at once. any general interest in my life i have dedicated an unhealthy level of commitment to the lore and knowledge. i love lotr, percy jackson, avatar, i have an unearthly obsession with mcr and ptv, gravity falls raised me, twin peaks is my fall obsession and i think those are my qualifications.
and i’ll admit i’m on hinge. many people claim to want “nerds”, until they start talking to you. if you ask me about lotr though, im going to tell you why bormir’s death was not in vain, i will quote “do you wear wigs”.
i will tell you why it’s weird that jacob is based after stephanie meyer’s brother. why bella shouldn’t have ended up with either of them (but the wolves are the coolest). how alice’s powers contradict her own logic when it comes to renesmee. because im genuinely interested. and you asked.
you can’t ask and be surprised when you receive an answer.
you have to be ok with movie marathons, memorabilia, movie posters, endless book cases, canon vs non-canon lore, theories, all of it. this is the price to pay for liking the nerdy people.
so don’t be half interested and complain when you hear about our “nerdy” interests for hours. admitting and opening up to someone about a personal interest is a vulnerable thing to do.
if you just want a partner with glasses and a goofy personality, then just say it. Because there are self proclaimed nerds out here who could do with a partner who shares similar joy and commitment to nerdy interests that control their life.
